Chapter 36
THEN:
It took ten years before lightning struck again. On a Monday morning in April, Janet was home alone in the mansion. She was drinking her coffee on the back porch, overlooking the yard, thinking she needed to pull up some weeds. The yard was in dire need of some TLC. She had been postponing it and neglecting it for too long.
Janet sighed and sipped her coffee. It was a beautiful day out, not a cloud in the sky, and seventy degrees. And she had the day off. There really was no excuse for her not to get it done. The kids had all left the nest and no longer demanded her constant attention.
âI guess itâs just you and me,â she said to the garden, then finished her cup and went inside to put it in the dishwasher. She wondered for a second if she should eat something. Yardwork always made her hungry. She reached for a banana, peeled it, and took a bite. She looked out the window at the people walking by on the sidewalk and saw a man on the street.
Why was he just standing there?
Was he watching the house?
Janet felt a chill run down her spine, then took another bite of her banana while observing him. She knew what Rob would say if he heard her now. He would say she was being paranoid as usual. He believed she had been like that ever since the attack. The worst part was that he was right.
Sometimes, she wished she could be more like himâforgiving and easygoing. But it was harder for her. Rob hadnât felt it on his own body. He hadnât experienced the deep feeling of injustice when she realized how easy this guy got off. Janet had always believed in the justice system and fairness, but not anymore.
The guy started to walk away, and she calmed down. She finished the banana and threw the peel in the garbage can. Then, she realized it was full and decided to take it out. She grabbed the bag and closed it, tying a knot, then walked out to the front of the house and down the stairs. She carried the bag to the garbage can and tossed it in. As she closed the lid, she spotted the man again, standing in front of the neighborâs house.
What is he doing? Why is he just standing there? Do I know him from somewhere?
Janet couldnât help herself. She felt anxious at seeing him there. He looked just like the guy who had attacked her. But it couldnât be. Was she seeing things? Was it just a result of her PTSD? For what happened to her? Was she forever going to think that every man on the street was about to attack her? Was that the only way she knew how to live?
I refuse to be that way. I refuse to let them win.
She snorted, then rushed back inside and closed the door behind her. She looked out the window and saw that the man was gone, then laughed at her own silliness.
